As you know, we introduced a reading programme called Accelerated Reader in September 2015. The programme enables children to develop a love of reading by being able to pick books at their level and to read at their own pace. When they finish reading a book, children take a computer-based quiz. The results of each quiz give children and teachers immediate feedback on the progress being made and the areas that need to be worked on to make further progress.
According to research, children who read at least 20 minutes a day, and have a good level of understanding of what they read, make the greatest progress. This is why in school we set aside time each day for children to read. Research also shows that those children who are supported at home by their parents/carers make greater progress than those without support.
To provide you with information about your child’s progress in reading, Accelerated Reader has a facility called Home Connect. This enables you to see the progress your child is making, the number of quizzes they have taken and the percentage of correct answers they have achieved. You can also receive emails showing your child’s quiz results as they happen!
